ANIMAL INTAKE

Giving up a pet is a very difficult decision. But if you find yourself in a situation where you have no choice, at least you have options.

Alternatives to Shelters or Rescue Groups

Bringing your pet to a shelter or rescue group should always be your last resort. Your first step should be to ask close friends, family members, neighbors and co-workers who may want to take in your pet as part of their family. Often, these efforts can have very happy endings.

We also recommend that you post your pet on Petfinder.com.  Give yourself a few weeks to find the right home for your pet. Never give away your pet to someone without screening the person/home carefully and don't hesitate to ask for references.  Please do not give your pet away "Free to a Good Home" as unfortunately there are dishonest individuals who could harm your pet.  Asking for a reasonable adoption fee may help deter such people.

How to Surrender Your Pet to SOAR

If you are unable to re-home your pet on your own, here are some of the guidelines for surrendering your pet to our organization:

Our main focus is dogs and cats, but we will on occasion be able to help members of the public with other pets such as small mammals, reptiles or birds. We will accept owned animals by appointment only, if we have available space, and if we think we will be able to find your animal a new home.

Your first step is to fill out our initial Intake Application. Please fill it out in its entirety and please be honest. The information you provide will help us find not just a home, but the right home for your animal. The completed application should be e-mailed to startingoveranimalrescue@hotmail.com.

If we decide to intake your pet, you will bring him or her to one of our veterinarians for a health check, spay or neuter surgery and needed vaccinations (we will pay for this) and we will pick him or her up from there.

Though we do not have a set fee for animal intake, donations are strongly encouraged. Once we have committed to taking in your animal, we will provide all the care he or she needs until we find him or her a loving permanent homes. This might take days, weeks or months, and cost hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars.

Please note that we are prohibited by law to accept any stray dogs over the age of 3 months.  By state law all stray dogs over the age of 3 months must be taken to Maricopa County Animal Care and Control.  If you have found a dog, please call Maricopa County Animal Care and Control at (602) 506-7387 or click here for more information on what steps you should take to reunite the dog with his or her owner.

CATS

If you have found a cat, take steps to try to find the owner. Put up flyers in your neighborhood, post the animal on Craig's List, and www.pets911.com. Go door to door. If you cannot find the owner, please read this page for alternatives to surrendering the cat to a shelter.

If you have lost your cat, immediately post flyers in your neighborhood and begin to visit open intake facilities such as Maricopa County Animal Care and Control and the Arizona Humane Society. Go door to door and let your neighbors know that your cat is missing.

Please consider microchipping your pet! This is the best way to ensure your lost pet will find his or her way home. All shelters scan animals for microchips upon intake.

Please visit www.avidmicrochip.com or www.homeagainid.com for more information about microchipping.
