ABOUT US

An all-volunteer run organization, we rescue from the heart.

Starting Over Animal Rescue (SOAR) was founded in early 2000 in response to the the severe pet over-population problem in Maricopa County. Each year, more than 100,000 dogs and cats are turned into shelters or surrendered to rescue groups by owners who no longer can or want to care for them. We take in, care for and find new homes for more than 1,000 of those animals each year.

We are are an all-volunteer run organization. None of the people involved with us is compensated financially. It is only because of each individual's compassion, dedication and heart that we are able to make such a big difference in the lives of so many.

It is our main priority to find not just a home, but the home: the right, loving permanent home for the animals in our care.

Each animal in our care is housed in a foster home. This is the least stressful environment for an animal who have lost his or her family, and it allows us to really get to know each individual animal. As it is our main priority to find not just a home, but the home: the right, loving permanent home for the animals in our care, this is crucial to us.

SOAR is an all-volunteer run private non-profit organization. It is only thanks to the hard work, compassion and dedication of our volunteers, and the support from our donors, that we are able to provide the animals in our care a second chance in life and a chance to start over. As a private charity, we receive no government funding. We rely solely on the support of the public and adoption fees to continue our mission.

SOAR is a proud partner of the Maddie's® Pet Rescue Project in Maricopa County and Maddie's® Spay/Neuter Project in Maricopa County, which are sponsored by generous grants from Maddie's Fund®, The Pet Rescue Foundation (www.maddiesfund.org).

The goal of these innovative and forward-thinking grant projects is that by 2012, Maricopa County will be a community in which every healthy or treatable dog and cat in our animal shelters can be guaranteed a permanent home.

The two collaborative projects involve twelve animal welfare organizations and dozens of veterinarians. All of the organizations in the Maddie's Projects work independently on the specific goals of the projects in which they are involved, and the groups also join together as a coalition to share ideas, strategies, and successes that help further the projects' ultimate goal.

About Maddie's Fund. Maddie’s Fund,® The Pet Rescue Foundation, (www.maddiesfund.org) is a family foundation funded by Workday and PeopleSoft Founder Dave Duffield and his wife, Cheryl. Maddie's Fund is helping to create a no-kill nation where all healthy and treatable shelter dogs and cats are guaranteed a loving home.

To achieve this goal, Maddie's Fund is investing its resources in building community collaborations where animal welfare organizations come together to develop successful models of lifesaving; in veterinary colleges to help shelter medicine become part of the veterinary curriculum; in private practice veterinarians to encourage greater participation in the animal welfare cause; and in the implementation of national strategies to collect and report shelter statistics. Maddie’s Fund is named after the family’s beloved Miniature Schnauzer who passed away in 1997.
